I spent the night tossing and turning, choosing to sleep in the guesthouse instead of Tallon’s bed. I didn’t even sleep in my own bed, but in my mamá’s, afraid that I would never see her again. Exhaustion wore me to the bone, my body bloody drained from everything that had happened only several hours before. But, I couldn’t force my brain to stop thinking — what was happening with Lizzy? Were they okay? Would I ever see them again?

I turned over and over, sleeping for a few minutes before bad dreams would wake me. Flashes of images: Lizzy’s pale face, her eyes open but not alive. Hooded men, with dark faces and hidden eyes. My mamá chained in purple bubbles of magic, unable to move or speak. Every time I awoke, fear spiked my blood as I wondered if I was having a premonition, or only my most dangerous worries were leaking into my dreams.

I awoke the next morning, teary-eyed and weary but the need to do something infused under my skin, making it impossible to stay in bed any longer.

I checked the clock: five in the morning. I sighed and stood up, deciding to make some coffee and check my phone. Disappointment crushed me when I flipped through my missed calls; there were only the ones I already knew about because I’d been avoiding them: from Denver, Blaze and Tallon. Nothing from Edward.

There was a knock at the door and for a brief second, I wished it would be Lizzy. Except, if it was really her, she’d have thrown herself in here and jumped on me instead of knocking. “It’s open.”

The door opened to reveal Harry, as I knew it would. He was wearing blue dress pants and a firmly pressed, white button-up shirt. His tie offered the only splash of color - a light blue. I mulled over his presence since we’d arrived from the waterfalls. He hadn’t offered much in terms of comfort but instead, had stood silently and steadily by me, offering a silent, stalwart type of consolation. He’d even appeared to care about the situation.

“I heard you get up.” He didn’t speak for a moment but his eyes dropped to my legs, and that’s when I realized that I’d been so tired last night, I’d thrown off my shoes and shorts and fallen straight into bed.

“Sorry.” I grabbed my blanket and wrapped it around me and he gave me a tight smile.

“There’re some people sleeping outside the back door.”

“What?”

He shrugged, running his hand through his hair. “Those guys you’re always hanging out with.”

What the hell? I moved past him, making sure my blanket was covering myself appropriately, then walked towards the back door. Harry’s voice carried up the hallway. “I’m going to make coffee.”

“Thanks.” I called back. “I desperately need it.”

“Thought you might.” When I didn’t answer him, he called to me again. “Carrie.”

Stopping, I turned towards him. “I didn’t get the chance to tell you yesterday, but I’m sorry about what happened.”

I chewed on my lower lip, trying not to let the rush of emotions show on my face.
